WHAT IS A VALVE COVER GASKET?

Valve cover gaskets are the seal between your valve cover and the your cylinder head. The gasket's primary function is to keep an air tight seal to prevent your engine oil from leaking out. Typical valve cover gaskets may last anywhere between 50,000 to 70,000 miles give or take. Most valve cover gaskets are made of rubber; older vehicles may use cork gaskets. Over time, the gasket becomes brittle and may allow engine oil to seep through. The best way to prolong your valve cover gasket is to stay on top of regularly scheduled oil changes. Fresh engine oil keeps your valve cover gasket properly conditioned.

CAN I DRIVE WITH A BAD VALVE COVER GASKET?

If your valve cover gasket is leaking, we recommend having it replaced before driving your vehicle. Even the smallest leak will eventually cause your engine oil level to diminish. Operating your engine with very low oil can cause severe engine damage.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A BAD RADIATOR?

When your valve cover gasket needs to be replaced you may experience one or more of the following:

  • Leaks- A leaking valve cover gasket may be caused by age, improper installation or a manufacturer defect. When your valve cover gasket is leaking, you'll often notice wetness around the seal area. Leaks get worse over time and the amount of wetness will get more noticeable as time goes on.

WHAT CAUSES MY VALVE COVER GASKET TO LEAK?

Most automotive gaskets are made of a synthetic rubber. Over time, this rubber becomes hard and brittle. A lack of preventative maintenance (such as regular oil changes) will often help contribute to premature gasket failure.
