BRAKE FLUID 101

Brake fluid should be flushed out once a year on all vehicles. Brake systems generate a lot of heat. When this heat is generated, any moisture in the hydraulic system condenses. The brake fluid absorbs this moisture and prevents it from boiling. If the moisture starts to boil, it can cause brake system failure.

TYPES OF BRAKE FLUID

  • DOT 3: DOT 3 brake fluid is the most commonly used brake fluid. It is highly corrosive and has a boiling point of 401 degrees Fahrenheit. Most commonly seen in Domestic vehicles.

  • DOT 4: DOT 4 is most widely used in Asian and European vehicles. Some manufacturers produce their own signature brake fluid. DOT 4 has a boiling point of 446 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • DOT 5: DOT 5 is a silicone based fluid and has a boiling point of 500 degrees Fahrenheit. It is NOT recommended in any vehicles with ABS systems. DOT 5 brake fluid aerates very easily and causes air bubbles to form in the brake system.
